Summary

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights。 But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U。S。 Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes。 The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him The Fittest (Real) Man in America。

In this curse-word-free edition of Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities。 Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential。

So I got this book bc I was talking to some guy at a party about running and he recommended it and I ordered it on Amazon right then and there, I never heard of David Goggins I have no idea what this was really about and once it arrived wasn’t sure if I was even going to read it。 I did end up reading it and I really liked it and took a lot from him but I don’t know that it was some life changing stuff, it was kind of just affirmations of stuff I’ve already identified and adopted into my own life So I got this book bc I was talking to some guy at a party about running and he recommended it and I ordered it on Amazon right then and there, I never heard of David Goggins I have no idea what this was really about and once it arrived wasn’t sure if I was even going to read it。 I did end up reading it and I really liked it and took a lot from him but I don’t know that it was some life changing stuff, it was kind of just affirmations of stuff I’ve already identified and adopted into my own life on my own journey。 Having said it was pretty enjoyable and did give some Built Different Hustle Mindset motivation tips。 。。。more

Damn。 This book was inspirational as fuck。 Goggings is truly a hard bloke。 Following him through his hardships was really interesting。 While some of the advice given in the book is perhaps too extreme (running on a broken leg, or running a 100 km lap without training is, at least most of the time, not a very good idea), the overall morale of the story is inspirational。 The day after having finished it, I actually went and purchased a pulse watch and new wireless headphones made for running, and Damn。 This book was inspirational as fuck。 Goggings is truly a hard bloke。 Following him through his hardships was really interesting。 While some of the advice given in the book is perhaps too extreme (running on a broken leg, or running a 100 km lap without training is, at least most of the time, not a very good idea), the overall morale of the story is inspirational。 The day after having finished it, I actually went and purchased a pulse watch and new wireless headphones made for running, and started a new training program。 While it has only been roughly two weeks since I started, I have been making great progress, running four times a week! So Goggings at least got me to get my fat ass from the couch and start working out。 Even if you're not on the market for motivation or inspiration, I would nonetheless say that this is an interesting read。 Goggings has an interesting story which in itself would warrant a read of this book。 。。。more

Part memoir, part biography, part self help book, if you’re looking for an inspirational non fic read, “Can’t hurt me” is just for you。 In it Goggins talks about how he rose above childhood traumas in an extremely rough situation at an early age to becoming one of the most decorated military service members and runners in history。 A badass honest look at life and what the human mind and spirit can accomplish with some desire and self motivation。 An A+ read。

I struggled to finish this book。 It was really difficult to see past the toxic masculinity and unnecessary profanity (and I don’t consider myself to be easily offended) to uncover anything inspirational。 Also, I just don’t understand how continually failing to prepare and physically torturing yourself to the point of near-death is something to aspire to。 My takeaway… dude needs serious therapy。

For anyone who doesn’t want to read a wall of text: It’s good, read it。 This book hit me hard, and I don’t mean someone threw it at me, though that might as well have been the case。 It was after the part where he got the note in school。 I had to stop reading there, and I couldn’t pick it back up for a while。 Something in that reminded me of the stuff I went through when I was a kid。 I had to deal with being called derogatory slurs every day by other students。 Not hidden like it was in the book, For anyone who doesn’t want to read a wall of text: It’s good, read it。 This book hit me hard, and I don’t mean someone threw it at me, though that might as well have been the case。 It was after the part where he got the note in school。 I had to stop reading there, and I couldn’t pick it back up for a while。 Something in that reminded me of the stuff I went through when I was a kid。 I had to deal with being called derogatory slurs every day by other students。 Not hidden like it was in the book, but out in the open by most of the other students regularly。 The teachers never did anything to stop it, to the point where it happened to, not just me, but others too, right in front of them。 When I read that he went to the principal about a similar situation, I got all choked up。 It’s one of the bravest things I can imagine anyone doing。 Even speaking up about how wrong it was ended up in death threats at my school or warnings to be quiet because they were afraid for their friend’s safety, and that was considered normal and alright。 We just had to take it。 There were days some of us would have to take different routes home rather than risk being jumped because they told off their offenders rather than just taking it as it was。 It never got that bad for me, I got death threats but never got jumped。 I was smart enough to play dumb and pretend I didn’t understand the Spanish words they’d been calling me from middle to high school, or to pretend I didn’t care。 I made it through school without breaking down over it。 After all, it wasn't the worst thing to happen to me, not by far。 But reading that in the book got to me。 It was like everything everyone had ever called me all hit me at once, and all those teachers who stood by and did nothing about it for so long just filled me with hopelessness。 I had to stop reading it, at least until I got a handle on my emotions。 Someone even suggested I stop reading the book altogether。 But that’s not me。 You can’t learn that way, and there’s a lot to be learned from this book。 It took nine psychology and/or neuroscience books, a lot of google searches, a lot of vitamins, exercise, and a doctor’s visit, but I made it back to the book in a little over two weeks and I’m glad I did, “Very few people even bother to try to control the way their thoughts and doubts bubble up。 The vast majority of us are slaves to our minds。 Most don’t even make the first effort when it comes to mastering their thought process。 Because it’s a never-ending chore。 Impossible to get right every time。” I read this soon after picking the book up again, and the truth behind it stuck with me。 I’ve been trying to figure out how to deal with a bunch of repressed memories that came back, and when you’re going through something like that you have to be vigilant, it's a constant battle trying to control your mind。 Or you end up braking down while reading about a non-related issue that’s similar to something you went through。 I think anyone suffering from PTSD will go to extremes which help them feel like they can survive。 Whether it’s obsessive compulsive reading, pushing themselves to extremes physically, or studying until they pass out from lack of food like Yeonmi Park… I read a lot of books, many by people who’ve been through traumatic events。 So this review, while lengthy and far more personal than my usual reviews, is not written with a light hand, but with careful thought and consideration… and a little lack of sleep mixed in for fun。 One of the most important qualities in any book, is its ability to affect the reader on an emotional level, and this one sure as hell did that for me。 Another important quality in any book, is that we can take away something of value from it。 In this case, I think this book could help a lot of people if they read it from start to finish, especially those who’ve been through traumatic experiences and believe there is no hope that things will get better。 One of the things it helped me realize is that we create our own strength, and that message is one of the most powerful ones I’ve seen come out any book。 It has certainly helped me。 So, thank you, to the author for creating it。 。。。more

He masters his mind at the cost of everyone and everything around him。 It's a good read to understand the lengths to which one can push their mind, but the sacrifices he makes in this pursuit were selfish and pitiful。 I love Goggins' work ethic and desire to press into the most uncomfortable and painful situations。 I think there's lots to learn from his experiences and the benefit of pushing beyond 40% of our limit。 Biggest takeaway was to stretch after every run and workout。 Can't underestimate He masters his mind at the cost of everyone and everything around him。 It's a good read to understand the lengths to which one can push their mind, but the sacrifices he makes in this pursuit were selfish and pitiful。 I love Goggins' work ethic and desire to press into the most uncomfortable and painful situations。 I think there's lots to learn from his experiences and the benefit of pushing beyond 40% of our limit。 Biggest takeaway was to stretch after every run and workout。 Can't underestimate the power of stretching。 。。。more

What will his life of suffering and pain amount to then? Maybe before he is truly on his deathbed, he will know that peace is a gift and it can be given instantly without wasting miserable years of life trying to earn it。 I appreciate the fact that people give their lives to serve our country in the military and train to be tough。 I’ve known many of them that have happy lives full of family and friends and peace。 I don’t think anyone should take David’s advice about life except to get off the couch and work hard, but that can be summed up in a sentence。 。。。more

2。5 starsWell, this book was certainly entertaining。 I read it with equal parts amazement and ridicule。I enjoyed reading about Goggins's background and the difficulties he had to overcome in order to become a Navy Seal。 He is clearly a driven and strong individual。 Unfortunately, things went steeply downhill from there。As much as I appreciate how many asses this guy must have inspired to get off the couch, he is peddling some seriously dangerous advice in this book。 He also seems mentally unstab 2。5 starsWell, this book was certainly entertaining。 I read it with equal parts amazement and ridicule。I enjoyed reading about Goggins's background and the difficulties he had to overcome in order to become a Navy Seal。 He is clearly a driven and strong individual。 Unfortunately, things went steeply downhill from there。As much as I appreciate how many asses this guy must have inspired to get off the couch, he is peddling some seriously dangerous advice in this book。 He also seems mentally unstable to me。 There is no reason to throw yourself into the types of dangerous situations he has- dangerously underprepared, dangerously undertrained, dangerously ignorant。 Playing a sick mind game with himself to try and fight the very necessary cues our bodies give us when something is wrong。 Coming up with physiological "rules" that make zero sense and have no support in science。 Encouraging people to push themselves so hard they will inevitably end up injured。 It's really irresponsible。The icing on the cake was the towards the end- he thought he was dying but it turned out he just needed to stretch?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME。 He's been running 100+ mile ultras and doing triathlons and the dude has never stretched?! It's too much, man。 If you want lifestyle and exercise advice from a dude that took 40 years to learn that you're supposed to stretch after exercising, help yourself。 I do think it's admirable that he decided to give wildland firefighting a go after retiring from the Navy。 That was actually pretty cool。 。。。more

The book is a reflection on his life and in many parts you have to read between the lines and reflect on what is being said to gain insight rather than taking the information at face value。 This being said it's very motivational and makes you question the capabilities of humans and what they can endure。 The audio book is a perfect running partner。 The book is a reflection on his life and in many parts you have to read between the lines and reflect on what is being said to gain insight rather than taking the information at face value。 This being said it's very motivational and makes you question the capabilities of humans and what they can endure。 The audio book is a perfect running partner。 。。。more

There were moments when I was reading this book and literally had to put it down so I could do squats or push-ups; yes, it's that motivating。 Other times, I felt like a useless piece of shit for never having even run a 5k when Goggins' first marathon was an ULTRA marathon (100 miles in a weekend)。 I've never been so impressed by someone's journey, and the words "callous your mind" will forever be stuck in my head。 Get a copy of this book, read it, and reread it。 There were moments when I was reading this book and literally had to put it down so I could do squats or push-ups; yes, it's that motivating。 Other times, I felt like a useless piece of shit for never having even run a 5k when Goggins' first marathon was an ULTRA marathon (100 miles in a weekend)。 I've never been so impressed by someone's journey, and the words "callous your mind" will forever be stuck in my head。 Get a copy of this book, read it, and reread it。 。。。more

An honest account of a man who did the impossible again and again, sharing with us not only his virtues and accomplishments, but his vices and failures。 This last word is important, because Goggins took responsibility of them and share with us how he triumphed the next time he tried。

I wouldn't approach this as a self-help book, if that's you're after。 I think Goggins would say as much himself, in spite of the fact that there are challenges associated with the various chapters that can help with self-improvement。If you have any interest in or respect for David Goggins already, its a must-read。 David's ghostwriter (Adam Skolnick) is a talented author and was really easy to listen to as he read along for the audiobook。 He managed to make it sound very much in the vein of how G I wouldn't approach this as a self-help book, if that's you're after。 I think Goggins would say as much himself, in spite of the fact that there are challenges associated with the various chapters that can help with self-improvement。If you have any interest in or respect for David Goggins already, its a must-read。 David's ghostwriter (Adam Skolnick) is a talented author and was really easy to listen to as he read along for the audiobook。 He managed to make it sound very much in the vein of how Goggins conducts himself, while still being concise and informative。I'm not a big fan of audiobooks, but this one was very interesting。 Each chapter has segments that are akin to a podcast discussion between David and Adam, providing further insight and summarizing the chapter。 The book is a great running companion。 My main issue was that there were some chapters that really intrigued me, and 2-3 others that sounded extremely similar。 I know that his life story is one of repetition and discipline, so it's only natural that a lot of his stories would sound the same。 I just found myself lost during some chapters; confused as to where we were at in his life, or what obstacle was being surpassed。 This may be my own issue with focus on audiobooks vs。 reading。 I would still recommend it to most people。 It has a lot of compelling and inspirational stories。 David Goggins is a very motivational man, but not in a conventional way。 I am fascinated by the way that he bucks the trend of modern "self-care", and accepts the fact that life is hard。 "Don't stop when you're tired, stop when you're done。 Get out there and get after it。" 。。。more

Terrific story, this man is truly hard as hell。 Lots of applicable, great advice。 The obstacles this man had to overcome are incredible, and he retells his story earnestly and powerfully。 Despite the inspiration his strength gives, you can't help but feel that as a man, as a person, his pain and determination to live the way he does cost him in his personal life, and that spartan, austere approach leads me to question how his personal relationships were affected。 Overall, great read, with a lot Terrific story, this man is truly hard as hell。 Lots of applicable, great advice。 The obstacles this man had to overcome are incredible, and he retells his story earnestly and powerfully。 Despite the inspiration his strength gives, you can't help but feel that as a man, as a person, his pain and determination to live the way he does cost him in his personal life, and that spartan, austere approach leads me to question how his personal relationships were affected。 Overall, great read, with a lot of thought provoking journaling exercises。 。。。more

This book was REALLY good。 I've watched numerous interviews of David Goggins talking about his life and the way he lives it so when he came out with a book I didn't think I would get much out of it。 To my surprise, I got more out of it than I could have ever imagined。 It's not a self help book。 It's a book about truth and how someone who should have every excuse in the world to be average, at times maybe even less than average, decided to face his issues head on。 Through reading all the details This book was REALLY good。 I've watched numerous interviews of David Goggins talking about his life and the way he lives it so when he came out with a book I didn't think I would get much out of it。 To my surprise, I got more out of it than I could have ever imagined。 It's not a self help book。 It's a book about truth and how someone who should have every excuse in the world to be average, at times maybe even less than average, decided to face his issues head on。 Through reading all the details of his life experiences and various trials that he failed at and later overcame has giving me a new found courage to do things I think are out of my reach to see how far I can really go。 Also, don't buy the clean version。 What are you afraid of curse words??
